Have governments been duped to turn a blind eye to pipeline damage? The Nordstream 2 saga has been mainly an economic and legal battle, failing to

1.0. Europe does have a choice – it does not have to make itself more
Russia is not a normal partner any more. Its strategic aim is to weaken the EU – to split and discredit it. Gazprom has been, and is still, the main tool of Russian foreign policy…Nord Stream 2 is a politically motivated project. We cannot hide our heads in the sand. It has to be countered by strong and clear political means.
Solidarity, as provided for in the Lisbon Treaty, should be a founding principle of the Energy Union. The construction of Nord Stream 2 and decisions about the Opal pipeline undermine this principle.
In the context of energy security, diversification is key. Diversification of routes and of sources.
We have a project that clearly is not heading in the direction of the Energy Union, but even more it is splitting the European Union.
But let me be clear: as with any other pipeline in the EU, this [Nord Stream II] pipeline will have to fully respect EU law, in particular the Third Energy Package, but also environmental, competition and public procurement rules.
Nord Stream II is a threat to the European Union. The project is incompatible with the very essence of European energy security, solidarity between the member states and runs contrary to the EU law – whether the Third Energy Package, environmental or competition law.
As President of the EPP group, I would like to emphasise the need to emphasise the project’s incompatibility with the core objectives of diversification of routes of transit for imported energy and sources of energy supply. In contrast, it would lead to a significant increase of the EU’s dependency on Russia for its gas supply.
Let me be very clear, the impact of the Nord Stream II project goes clearly beyond the legal discussions. Nord Stream II could alter the landscape of the EU’s gas market while not giving access to a new source of supply or a new supplier, and further increasing excess capacity from Russia to the EU.
One can credibly argue that Nord Stream II amounts to a reverse Energy Union policy. The project in direct contradiction to the principles of the Energy Union seeks to concentrate pipeline routes and increase supply dependence on a single supplier.
Nord Stream II contradicts the European Energy Union - a policy of diversification of energy sources and suppliers…. I myself call it a killer project because I believe it is part of a programme to destroy European unity.
