US energy minister says Nordstream 2 is “in conflict with EU interests.”
The fear that the United States would favour its relationship with Russia over the European Union has been upended by US Deputy Energy Minister Robin Dunnigan.
Now the United States wants to prevent the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which will bring Russian natural gas direct to Germany. The goal of the Americans’ diplomatic efforts is to frustrate Russia’s power over the supply of natural gas to Europe. US pressure is increasing towards a number of countries reluctant to approve the project.
Visiting Brussels, Ms Dunnigan says the US believes that important NATO countries, such as Germany, are too addicted to natural gas from Russia. The United States warned that Moscow can blackmail Europe and Russia today represents a greater threat than before. “There is a general concern about the pipeline – especially in the current political situation,” said Ms Dunnigan, pointing out that Russia has weaponised natural gas if the Kremlin wants to pressurise another country.
“There is no point in implementing this project,” she said, “at this time when there are so many alternatives. It is also not in line with the EU’s declared energy goals, and it is better to concentrate on a large number of other projects to ensure more supply lines of natural gas.”
Robin Dunnigan told the European Commission: “We see a common interest with the Commission. The EU Commission also believes that Nord Stream 2 is in conflict with the overall interests and strategy of EU countries. The EU Commission would like to negotiate with the Russians on behalf of Denmark.”
She also highlighted that Ukraine risks losing billions in revenue if the Russians tighten the natural gas screw further. “The United States and the EU are worried about Ukraine. We are working together to ensure a good transition for the country. However, Ukraine is highly economically dependent on the gas that flows through its territory. If Ukraine loses money, it will have a very big impact on developments in the country, “said the Energy Minister.
If the Nordstream 2 battle is lost and it is not possible to slow down the pipeline’s construction, it is Americans’ strategy to ensure the expansion of two other gas lines that are independent of Moscow. The so-called Baltic Pipe, which is to go from Norway to Poland, and the Southern Gas Corridor, which must go from the oil and gas fields in Azerbaijan through Turkey to Greece and from there to Europe.
